If signs of stress and aging are making you look older than you feel or angry when you’re not, then you may be a patient in need of neuromodulator therapy such as Botox®, Xeomin® or most recently Dysport® injections to relax the muscles that create wrinkles thereby lessening the appearance of frown lines, laugh lines and crow’s feet.

A protein toxin produced by the clostridium botulinum bacteria, eliminates the facial wrinkles that occur with overuse of facial muscles. A small amount of purified botulinum neurotoxin is injected right into the muscles that are responsible for creating wrinkles. Toxin molecules effectively inactivate the muscles that produce wrinkles, thereby causing lines to disappear or diminish dramatically, albeit temporarily. The injections need to be repeated approximately every 3-6 months, therefore.

This treatment is our most popular cosmetic procedure. Whether for a single special event or to maintain looking your best, some of the common areas treated include:

  • Crow’s feet,

  • Frown lines,

  • Laugh lines,

  • Forehead wrinkles.

  • It can be used in the neck and mouth area,

  • It helps reduce a “gummy smile”,

  • It can contour the eyebrow.

  • It has been used to decrease sweating effectively from hands feet groin and armpits.

Your treatment is quick, minimally painful and results usually last three to six months. The products may take 3-7 days to show an effect. After that Dr. Dolynchuk may ask you to return for a follow-up appointment to check the dosage and the results. Our experience shows that after several treatments, the effect of neuromodulators appears to last longer, often up to seven months. The most common complication is a slight, temporary drooping of the eyelid. Botulinum toxin is used in extremely small amounts and does not spread throughout the body so you can return to full activity immediately. It can be used by almost anyone: patients who are pregnant, breast-feeding or who have a neurologic disease should not use neuromodulators.

Botulinum toxin is commonly used with fillers and laser peels to enhance your appearance further, especially if lines and folds are present which are deep. Volume is important in rejuvenating the face but neurotoxin is helpful in “setting the stage” for such volume correction such as structural fat grafts, hyaluronic acid and collagen fillers, as well as Selphyl, Radiesse and Sculptra which increase collagen formation. Laser peels heal smoother when botulinum toxin is used pre-peel.

Things to avoid are exercise and over activity. Do not rub the injected areas, wear tight hats, caps or other headwear. You may wear make-up that evening and return to work that same day. A slight dull pain is common at the injection sites that will fade by nightfall, although some people may develop a mild headache as well.

The fact that botulinum toxin treatment has been used cosmetically for over 14 years in millions of patients and has proven safe should make you feel confident in continuing your treatments. Certainly the results will speak for themselves as you experience your new refreshed look.
